Hello! We are Praz and Lydia, the president and secretary (respectively) of the unofficial Queen Latifah Movie Club (QLMC) here in Los Angeles. We meet once a month with our awesome club members to enjoy a Queen Latifah film, analyze the entertainment and social impacts, and package the discussion in a newsletter nugget for our far-flung members. But it’s not just fun and games! A good meeting requires the following components:
Any good social gathering needs yummy food – the more epic, the better! – and for the QLMC, we always try to make our food “QL-related” or fit with the theme of that month’s film! For Brown Sugar, Praz made a brown sugar cake shaped in the letters “QL”! When we watched Beauty Shop, we had lighter “spa-fare,” including cucumber sandwiches and fresh cocktails. For Taxi, we ate NY-style pizza and one of our members decorated a cake to look like a taxicab, complete with QL and Jimmy Fallon inside! A church-style brunch with bagels, egg-bake, and a make-your-own-waffle station was perfect for our Joyful Noise meeting!
For our inaugural meeting, Praz made and distributed paper crowns, so that we could all feel like a QUEEN during QLMC – and you better believe we wear them at every meeting! Other activities have included a QL-perfume sampling and blind test to choose our favorite, “Pin the crown on Queen” (with the winner getting to choose the next month’s film), and a play-by-play from club members who attended a QL concert at the Hollywood Bowl!
Choosing the Right Films!
It’s important to us that we sample from the QL film canon fairly. We like to vary it up between comedies, drama and romance! The most important thing about choosing a film for the QLMC is to make sure we watch movies that feature a lot of Queen Latifah, which we measure using something we have termed the “Lack of Queen index.” For example, the LOQ index is very low in the film Beauty Shop, where QL shines as the star! The LOQ index is considerably higher in Brown Sugar because QL is in less scenes as the supporting actress. Our goal is always for maximum QL screen time!
Steering the Post-Film Discussion!
We aren’t very good at this part, and it usually devolves into us discussing how sexy the male co-star is … Common vs. Jimmy Fallon? Steve Martin as the dark horse? Everyone has their favorite!
Convincing Pregnant Members They Should Name their Babies “Queenie!”
Self-explanatory. We’re still crossing our fingers that our newest member will enter the world as QL’s namesake! But we have made an executive decision to refer to the child as “Queenie” or “Lil’ Queen” regardless of what is on the “official” birth certificate.
Wrap It All Up With a Newsletter!
As club secretary, Lydia takes notes during the film and meeting, resulting in something our satellite members may enjoy. Newsletter components include musings, schematics, rivalries, scene reconstructions, attendance records, and film analysis.
Overall, we have had a great time putting our club together and incorporating three of life’s greatest ingredients: good friends, good food, and Queen Latifah! And we firmly believe that the QLMC is something that could be incorporated into any social circle, so why not try hosting your own Queen Latifah Movie Club?
