“Granny Franny” Honored as Homecoming Queen!

Frances Wood is one of the most popular students at MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, Kansas and was recently crowned homecoming queen. But, what people don’t probably expect to find out is that Frances is 82 years old.

Affectionately nicknamed “Granny Franny” by students on campus, Frances decided to go back to college after 63 years. “I wanted to do something different after my husband passed away. We had been married for 59 years. Instead of sitting home bored, I decided to go back to school,” says Frances.

The school honored Frances during half time at a football game by making her honorary homecoming queen, the first award of its kind ever given by the school. “It brings back great memories. I’ve never been a homecoming candidate. That was fun,” says Frances. “I attended the football game and the kids did give me an applause. They have always made me feel so welcome.”

Besides school, Frances has been keeping busy with her three children, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren! And has been keeping up her energy by playing table tennis for almost fifty years. “I play in the Kansas Senior Olympics. I got 4 gold medals, part of them was for participation. I do doubles with my daughter. I hold my own on table tennis.”

Queen Latifah and Frances played a game of table tennis on the show. Watch to find out who reigned “queen” of the table tennis courts.
